High Speed Rail Industry Leaders Conference: Attracting the Brightest and the Best

West Midlands stakeholders across the whole rail sector supply chain are invited to attend a major conference taking place at the Think Tank in Birmingham on Monday 11th July 2016.

The challenge of recruitment and retention of skills is an industry-wide priority. In recent months the Transport Industry Skills Strategy (TISS) and the Rail Supply Group (RSG) Sector Strategy have both sought to address this, with high speed rail identified as a primary opportunity to upskill the industry and diversify the sort of people that it attracts, to ensure we are tapping into the widest possible talent pool.

Taking place in Birmingham this FREE conference will look to explore how the industry can encourage diversity in the rail sector by:

  • improving the profile of engineering to attract the brightest and the best
  • addressing the gender imbalance and attracting more women
  • addressing the gap between school leavers and entering college
  • raising the visibility of apprenticeships in the rail sector

Supply Chain ‘Crucial to UK Railways’

The rail industry in the UK has never been busier, with large-scale projects across the country providing massive opportunities. And speakers at Made in the UK will outline how manufacturers can take advantage. Projects such as HS2 and the major improvements to the rail links across the north of the country continue to make headlines, which has led to the rail sector being under increased scrutiny. The industry’s supply chain in particular is set to benefit from these network projects. And the supply chain needs to take advantage of what’s on offer.

These opportunities will be the key focus of The Railway session at Made in the UK Conference in Liverpool on 17 June. The session will hear from a number of high-quality experts. Giles Thomas, rail systems director, HS2 will be one of them and he [said], “There is a huge opportunity for us to utilise technology to improve on the way we work in building the HS2 infrastructure. The innovation that the rail supply chain offers us will be crucial to making HS2 happen.”
